Don't believe everything you read… yes, you read that right!
There are tons and tons of resources to use when deciding where to go on your next vacation. I recommend finding a few sites or magazines you like. I like Matador, Afar, Wanderlust, Travel and Leisure, and Conde Nast Traveler.
If you are planning an extended period (weeks or longer) of travel or an ex-pat relocation, you should look for resources outside the typical tourism guides. Travel guides like Frommers or Fodor might be helpful. This site won’t be geared towards long (>1 week) trips.
Use “listicles” with caution.
You know, "The top 10 places to see in 2022 "kind of article. There is nothing wrong with listicles, and I enjoy looking at these lists, often to learn about new places. But I don’t let them dictate where I plan to travel with any sense of urgency.
I have my own master list of “traveling to dos” that I compiled many years ago, and I am constantly adding to it (often based on the new places I learn about when I read my preferred magazines).
Based on my master list, I choose around 4-5 places or experiences I want to do for the upcoming year. Nothing is set in stone, just something to help keep me on track when planning. This also allows me not to become so easily overwhelmed by the constant bombardment of “new places you must see now.”
My take-home note:
Don’t fall prey to advertisers’ skillful plans to sell you new shiny things to buy. Do authentically add exciting ideas to your “master list.” Where you place them on your list is up to you!
As the title of my site says, when it comes to travel, you need to be your own compass. Travel to a place because you have an authentic desire to visit, periodt!
